Karuna Welfare is a registered, charitable trust working for the all around development and well being of destitute children.

The idea of starting a home and a school for street children and orphans was born 5 years ago, when we started a teaching and feeding program for twenty homeless children in Mumbai. We saw a rapid change in their lives in response to receiving basic security and love. However, we soon realized that the positive impact on the children's lives was in vain, since every evening returned to their same old environment on the streets.

With this in mind, we started our first home for twenty street children in 1999. Over the next two years this first home served, as a model for what later would grow into becoming the Karuna Welfare.

Currently, Karuna Welfare is running four Homes that house 80 such children and a school for them that is located in Vasai. The students will finish their education with the Secondary School Certificate (SCC), or the National Open School Certificate. The school program also includes sports, extracurricular activities and vocational training at the Karuna workshop. Karuna Welfare is not a feeding program: it is a home and a fully operational school.

We not only want to provide a home and education for the children, but would also like to offer an environment where there is an atmosphere of love and security that these children would otherwise never know.

In the year 2003, a plot of land in Vasai measuring 2.5 acres was donated to the Karuna Welfare. Our plan is to build on this piece of property, a school for 1000 children and housing that would accomodate 300 orphans.
Architects, builders and suppliers have already committed to rendering their services at cost price, which will substantially decrease the project cost.

Our plan is to commence construction of the school by September 2004, and have the school partly functional by the start of the academic year, June 2005, and the entire project ready by August 2005.

Each of our orphan homes has between 12-20 children living with a parent couple, that have dedicated their lives to make an impact on the lives of these children. In this way we also provide a family atmosphere of love, which is required for the growth of any child.

The school has been registered under MAH/1322/2000/Mumbai/dtd. 14.12.2000 & F-22569/2001/Mumbai/dtd. 27.02.2001, and is being be run by highly qualified teachers and administrative staff, most of whom has been with the project from its inception in 1999.

Our project is already in operation and in place, and the concrete result of the last 5 years is evident in the lives of the children who are already with us. You are welcome to personally visit us.
